ACSM - Adobe Content Server Message in Adobe Digital Editions (ADE). A small file used in the authorisation of DRM documents.
ADE - Adobe Digital Editions. Software for users to view and manage eBooks and other digital publications.
COOL-ER - Ereader from Interead.
COOLER-EBOOKS - Online book superstore from Interead with over a million titles available for all types of ereader.
DPI - Dots Per Inch. Measure of dot density, in particular the number of individual dots that can be placed within the span of one linear inch. The COOL-ER screen is 170dpi. Standard computer monitors are 72dpi.
DRM - Digital Rights Management. Generic term that refers to access control technologies. COOL-ER supports DRM through Adobe Digital Editions. Electronic books read on a personal computer or an ereader sometimes use DRM restrictions to limit copying, printing, and sharing of ebooks.
Ebook - Electronic Book. A book designed for reading on screen. This could be on an ereader, computer or mobile device such as a PDA or phone.
Edocument - Electronic Document. A document created and transported in binary format.
EPUB - Electronic Publication. Ebook standard file created by the International Digital Publishing Forum consisting of reflowable content, meaning that the on screen text is optimized for the particular display device. COOL-ER compatible format.
Ereader - Electronic Reader. Device designed to show electronic documents in a book format. Usually similar in size to a standard paper novel.
FB2 - FictionBook ebook format, which originated and gained popularity in Russia. COOL-ER compatible format.
GIF - Graphics Interchange Format, a bitmap image format particularly used for vector images on the Internet dues to a relatively low file size. COOL-ER compatible format.
HTML - HyperText Markup Language. Often used for web pages and available as a ‘Save as’ option within many programs. COOL-ER compatible format.
JPG - Joint Photographic Experts Group (the committee who created the standard). A graphic file suitable for photographs and highly detailed images. COOL-ER compatible format.
Linux - An independent operating system based on Open Source code. Types of Linux operating system include Ubuntu, Red Hat and SUSE. Although the COOL-ER runs on a Linux platform, it is not suitable for file transfer of documents from a Linux computer (for now).
Mobipocket - Amazon owned ebook file type. Compatible only with Amazon ereaders: Kindle 1, Kindle 2 and Kindle DX.
MP3 - Audio Layer 3. A common audio format for consumer audio storage as it provides good quality playback with small file size. COOL-ER compatible format.
O/S - Operating System. For example; Microsoft Windows XP, Apple Macintosh X, Linux Ubuntu.
PDA - Personal Digital Assistant. Mobile device sometimes used for viewing edocuments.
PDF - Portable Document Format created by Adobe containing images and text. COOL-ER compatible format.
PRC - Binary file format. COOL-ER compatible format.
Project Gutenberg - PG. Volunteer effort to digitize and archive cultural works, in order to "encourage the creation and distribution of ebooks”. Many out-of-copyright books have been converted and are now available from the PG site.
Reflow - PDF and EPUB text is sometimes reformatted to make the best use of the screen size while still showing the content in a logical order. For example, a PDF with several columns may be shown in a single column format spanning the width of the COOL-ER screen. This automatic feature improves on-screen readability.
RTF - Rich Text Format document file type developed by Microsoft for cross-platform document interchange so suitable for use with most O/S and document processing programs. COOL-ER compatible format.
SD Card - Secure Digital Card. Additional memory device which can extend the COOL-ERs capacity by up to 4GB. (Taking the total to 5GB including COOL-ER’s integral 1GB storage).
SDHC - Secure Digital High Capacity Memory Card also known as SD 2.0. An extension of the SD card family that increases each card's storage capacity up to 32GB. SDHC cards share the same physical and electrical form factor as original SD cards. COOL-ER devices are not compatible with SDHC.
TXT - Text file or textfile (sometimes also known as flatfile). A filename extension for files consisting of text that usually contain very little formatting. COOL-ER compatible format.
